Asbestos
is a mineral that was crushed and milled into a fine
particulate, and shipped to corporations for
building and insulation materials. Asbestos mines
around the world, many in Canada, produced over 250
million tons of asbestos for use in the United
States between 1890 and 1970. Asbestos was added to
a variety of products including insulation,
automotive brakes, fireproofing, pipe covering,
cements, refractory materials, gaskets, floor tiles
and joint compounds. Asbestos exposure by inhaling
loose asbestos fibers is associated with various
forms of lung disease, including
Mesothelioma.
The dangers of asbestos were known to the companies
that made these products as early as the 1920s.
However, asbestos was sold and used without warnings
up until the 1980s -- when most asbestos products
were banned in the United States and other
countries. Alternative materials were available that
could have been used in place of asbestos.
Workers in the following industries were regularly
exposed to asbestos and are at the highest risk for
developing associated lung diseases:
Asbestos
fibers are so toxic, that industrial and trade
worker’s families may be exposed to
mesothelioma
through particles that cling to the worker’s
clothing, shoes, skin and hair. This type of
“second-hand” exposure to asbestos is known as Para
occupational exposure.

My name is John T. I
have a type of cancer called Mesothelioma. I got
this disease while doing my job. My story begins
almost 40 years ago, when I worked in a steel mill.
None of us knew anything about asbestos back then.
Like most workers we just assumed that the air we
breathed was safe, lord knows working in a steel
mill we had enough other things to worry about. What
I didn’t know was that every day I was inhaling
asbestos and that one day it would almost kill me.
