Baycol is a
prescription drug manufactured by Bayer A.G.
Pharmaceuticals. Baycol belongs to the statin class
of drugs, which lower cholesterol by blocking
certain enzymes. It was widely prescribed to lower
cholesterol and reduce heart attacks. Baycol was
approved for use in the U.S. in 1997. As a result of
31 deaths linked to the popular drug, Bayer
voluntarily recalled Baycol on August 8, 2001.
Statin drugs have
been known to cause muscle cell damage and, in some
cases, a condition called rhabdomyolysis that
results in muscle cell breakdown. The contents of
muscle cells are released into the bloodstream
causing muscle pain, fever nausea, vomiting, kidney
failure and even death. Rhabdomyolysis occurs ten
times more often with Baycol than other statin drugs
and has lead to more than 30 deaths.
After receiving
reports of increased problems, Bayer adjusted the
recommended dosage level of Baycol, and claimed that
patients were taking the drug in doses not
consistent with Baycol's product labeling. Assuming
that the patients were to blame rather than the
drug, Bayer reaffirmed that the proper use of Baycol
was safe, and said that no serious side effects
should occur.
At Brown &
Crouppen, our experienced team of Baycol and
defective drug lawyers provides tough, aggressive
representation for Baycol victims and their
families. We are currently settling Baycol claims
on behalf of our clients with Bayer.
If you or a loved one
has taken Baycol, and suffered any adverse reaction
or side effects, including muscle pain throughout
the body or specifically in the calves and lower
back, nausea, dark urine, weakness, malaise,
tenderness, fever, and vomiting, please call us. In
rare cases, the muscle injury is so severe that
patients develop renal failure and other organ
failure, which can be fatal. We will work hard to
find answers, hold Bayer responsible and get you the
compensation you deserve.

My
mother was a great lady. I wish you could have met
her. She was loving, wise and just about the best
cook in the world. I really miss her. A few years
ago mom was given a prescription drug by her doctor
to help manage her chronic disease. Unfortunately
this new wonder drug didn’t help at all, in fact it
really hurt her. You see after mom started taking
the drug we noticed she was going downhill. She was
tired all the time, she couldn’t sleep and became
very restless.
