Administration has taken 12 drugs off the market
because of dangerous side effects, Baycol™ is one
of the most recent drugs deemed too dangerous to be
on the market in the United States.
Baycol’s™ life as
an approved prescription drug was relatively short.
It was released with FDA approval in 1997. Baycol™
is a cholesterol lowering drug in the Statin family.
Baycol™ goes by a few different names. Its generic
name is Cerivastatin, and it was also marketed as
Llipobay. No matter what the name, Baycol™ is no
longer available in the U.S. because it’s
suspected of hurting the very people it was supposed
to help.
Baycol™(lipobay)
according to its manufacturer, the Bayer™
Corporation, is responsible for some people
developing a condition called Rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is a life threatening condition that
causes severe muscle cell breakdown where the
contents of the muscle cells get released into the
bloodstream. Rhabdomyolysis can eventually lead to
kidney failure and death. Bayer™ reports Baycol™
use may be related to over 50 deaths.
The most common
symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis are:
- Weakness
- Muscle tenderness
- Muscle pain,
especially in the calfs and lower back
- Dark urine
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
Fatalities caused by
Rhabdomyolysis related to Baycol™ use are usually
associated with elderly patients. Other risk factors
are, people taking high doses of Baycol™ and also
people taking Baycol™ in conjunction with
Gemfibrozil™ another type of cholesterol lowering
drug.
