A Lead Paint Lawyer's Story
My name is Edward Herman, I am a lawyer at Brown and Crouppen. I am also a father, one of the most rewarding parts of practicing law for me is that I get to help children who are seriously injured by lead paint poisoning.

The hazards of lead paint poisoning have been known for almost a century. Sadly, it took the United States until 1979 to remove lead from the paint manufacturing process. The effects of lead poisoning have been devastating on our children. The typical poisoning case involves a child under the age of seven who absorbs the lead by eating small chips of paint that flakes off painted surfaces in their homes. There have also been exposures involving lead dust that settles on objects that small children tend to put in their mouths. Even though lead hasn’t been allowed in paint for almost 25 years it’s estimated that over 50% of children living in urban settings are exposed annually. This shocking statistic is explained by the fact that these children often live in dwellings that are old and poorly maintained.

Exposure to lead can lead to a life time of serious medical problems. Children who maintain high levels of lead can suffer brain damage, learning disabilities, speech problems, hyperactivity, loss of learning capacity and attention deficit disorder (A.D.D.) it’s been estimated that lead poisoning may be a factor in 76,000 cases of mental retardation every year. There is no question that lead paint poisoning is directly responsible for an alarming number of American children never being able to achieve their full potential.

So, that’s the story about lead paint poisoning and children, it’s not a very pretty one, that’s why I work in this area. I believe that these children and their families are entitled to be compensated for these injuries caused by lead. I also believe that successful lead litigation will cause landlords to think twice before they ignore their obligations to maintain safe places for their tenants to live.

At Brown and Crouppen children injured by lead are a high priority. If you have any questions about lead paint poisoning we can answer them.
