  FDA approved in 1995 for treatment of severe to moderate pain

  First marketed in 1996

  Active Ingredient: OxyCodone, an opium derivative also used in Percodan and Percocet

  OxyCodone is highly addictive

  Increased abuse in urban, suburban, and rural areas

  Emergency room visits related to prescription drugs containing oxycodone increased from 3,395 in 1993 to 10,825 in 2000

  Almost 500 deaths have been attributed to OxyContin use

  Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Conn., manufacturer of the product, has issued a warning in the form of a "Dear Health Care Professional" letter, which will be distributed to physicians, pharmacists, and other health-care professionals to educate them about the risks of the drug

  The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has strengthened its precautions in the labeling of OxyContin Tablets, including issuing their strongest warning – a Black Box Warning.

  In 2002, a study of American students found OxyContin abuse beginning as early as the eighth grade.

  The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has found the highest rates of abuse in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

  At least 1,000 deaths per year are due to OxyContin abuse.

  The DEA is requesting that family physicians and non-specialists be banned from prescribing the drug.

  In August of 2001, Purdue Pharma announced their blueprint for a “smart pill” that would be harder to abuse than OxyContin. At that time, the timeframe for the smart pill’s availability was in the three to five year range.

Hydrocodone — A chemical cousin of oxycodone, the active ingredient in OxyContin.
