PPA (Phenylpropanolamine) is a staple in the over-the-counter and prescription cold and diet drug industry. Dozens of popular products with household names like Dimetapp, Contac, Dexatrim and Tavist-D contain PPA. More than 7 million people take these products each year assuming they are completely safe.

Recently, the FDA has indicated that the primary ingredient in many popular over-the-counter drugs, PPA, may be unreasonably dangerous. While currently the PPA recall is voluntary, the FDA is in the process of formulating an official and mandatory policy to ban PPA. The primary danger associated with PPA is an increased risk of a stroke.

The FDA estimates that annually between 200 and 500 strokes are associated with using products that contain PPA.

Strokes caused by PPA typically occur in women under 50. The symptoms may start with a headache, stiff neck, and some loss of consciousness. The headaches are often precursors to stroke and can occur several days before the full onset of stroke. Although rare, the strokes caused by PPA are likely to be severe and fatal. Many of the young women who experienced a stroke did so after only one dose of Phenylpropanolamine or PPA. These strokes are usually hemorrhagic strokes, or bleeding in the brain.

Drug company lawyers have quietly settled over two-dozen lawsuits challenging PPA's safety. All of the settlements were based on confidentiality agreements that forced victims to keep quiet about their ordeal. This settlement practice effectively shut the public out of the debate over PPA.

My mother was a great lady. I wish you could have met her. She was loving, wise and just about the best cook in the world. I really miss her. A few years ago mom was given a prescription drug by her doctor to help manage her chronic disease. Unfortunately this new wonder drug didn’t help at all, in fact it really hurt her. You see after mom started taking the drug we noticed she was going downhill. She was tired all the time, she couldn’t sleep and became very restless.   CONTINUE
